Texas State University - San Marcos | Family Consumer Sciences Building Program
Texas State University–San Marcos’ Department of Family & Consumer Sciences within the College of Applied Arts commissioned Broaddus Planning to conduct analyses to ascertain what the needs of the department were, and the ability of the existing building to accommodate them. Broaddus Planning conducted various workshops with the faculty and students, and worked with the department chair to align the requests of the faculty and students with the strategic plan.
Once the discrepancy between the “needs” and the ability to address them was determined, a full programming study was commissioned on an expansion and renovation to the building. Broaddus Planning facilitated working groups of faculty and staff to define the spatial, technical and adjacency requirements of each space proposed for the addition and renovation.
In the end the department was provided with almost 60% new space and renovation of an additional 4,000 square feet within the existing wings of the building. Broaddus Planning worked with the department to align the needs that were most appropriate for the new addition, and those that could be restructured more economically within the existing building. This series of studies was so successful that the campus submitted the process taken and results to the Society for College and University Planners (SCUP) at their 2009 national convention.
